One of the most common questions we see when users run our Compatibility Checker is regarding PCIe generations. If you buy a brand new RTX 40-series or RX 7000-series GPU, do you absolutely need to upgrade your older B450 or Z390 motherboard?
The Bandwidth Difference
PCIe 4.0 offers exactly double the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0. A standard x16 slot operating at PCIe 3.0 provides roughly 16 GB/s of bandwidth, while PCIe 4.0 provides 32 GB/s.
Real World Gaming Performance
In the vast majority of gaming scenarios, the answer is No, it will not bottleneck.
Testing has shown that even high-end cards like the RTX 4080 barely saturate a PCIe 3.0 x16 connection. The performance difference in gaming between running the card at Gen3 vs Gen4 is typically between 1% and 3%—a difference that is completely imperceptible to the human eye.
The Exception: x8 GPUs
There is one major exception. Budget GPUs like the RTX 4060 or RX 7600 are physically wired for only 8 PCIe lanes (x8). If you plug an x8 PCIe 4.0 GPU into a PCIe 3.0 motherboard, it runs at PCIe 3.0 x8. This severely limits bandwidth (down to 8 GB/s) and can cause noticeable stuttering in memory-intensive games.
